Portrait Photography FAQs

Can you retouch the photos?

Absolutely. My packages include a Digital Download or USB of all images taken plus a sum of photos (selectable by the bride and groom) for retouching. I edit the selected photos to be either black & white, adjust the color tones of the images, soften skin tones, and/or remove any unwanted background activity.

How many images can I expect to see for a portrait session?

On average, I shoot 100 images per hour.

Can you tell me about your style as a photographer?  What do you look for?

My style as a photographer is capturing those special moments as they occur. I’d say my strength as a photographer is getting great candid shots. I pay close attention to the chemistry between my couples. If they are spontaneous with each other, I’m right there with my camera to capture that moment. If a couple looks to me for guidance and wants more posing, I get that too. Still, each wedding I photograph is completely different from the next because each of my couples are unique. I look for the emotion between my couples—the laughter, etc. I also look around for interesting lighting, mood, and the best scenery to create a great composition. I don’t always follow the “technical” rules of photography—in my opinion, a great photo is the mood and emotion captured.

How long does it take to see the proofs after a photo shoot? When do we get the photos?

Proofs are posted to an online (private) proofing gallery within two weeks (depending on season) of your shoot. Your photos are delivered via Digital Download or by mail (USB) after you’ve selected the photos you want retouched and after I’ve retouched them. Your Digital Download (or USB) will include all original Hi-res photos I took as well.

What is the deposit amount to book?

My portrait packages consist of three payments:

  1. A 25% non-refundable reservation fee is due to reserve a date. This is considered a retainer fee, not a deposit.
  2. 50% of the your balance is due 90 days prior to your photo shoot— also non-refundable.
  3. The remaining balance is due on the day of your event.

What is your cancellation policy?

In the event of a cancellation, any payment already submitted will be applied to any future booking with me.

Do you have any tips for choosing a location for a photo shoot? What travel arrangements would be made for getting there?

Choosing a place near the side of the island you are staying on is recommended if you don’t want to travel far. I know of many great locations throughout Maui. If you have a rental car, I can meet on location. If not, I’m more than happy to pick you up, and we can carpool.

Do you charge a travel fee?

I do not charge a travel fee for the island of Maui. However, charges apply for coverage in Maui County’s surrounding populated islands, including: Lanai and Molokai. Inquire for more details.

What is the best time of the day for photography in Maui?

The best time to shoot is in the morning— around 8am— or about 1 1/2 hours prior to sunset. These are peak times for great lighting and provide beautiful-scenic backdrops. For sunset photography, we’d want to start around 4:45pm.

Can we change dresses in between the shots— or do we need to complete the shoot in the same dress?

Absolutely. You may change dresses in between shots. Just keep in mind, we shoot in remote areas, so there may not be places to change. Some couples just change in their car, with a towel for privacy.
